A window keeps popping up with the message: "System error! Your system is infected with a dangerous virus! Note: strongly recommend to install antispyware program to clean your system and avoid total crash of your computer! Click ok to download the spyware"
Is this a legitimate error notice, and if not, how can I fix it? The operating system is Windows XP and the messenger function is disabled. Virus and spyware scans are both clean.

Your computer likely has a Smitfraud infection, that is what is causing the phony system error alerts. Any "warnings" are fradulant and a scam. Do NOT download that "antispyware".
Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG, Norton, McAfee or Spybot S %26 D cannot remove it as you have found out.
The standard tool to remove this pest is SmitfraudFix. The full removal procedure and the free removal tool is here:

After running SmitfraudFix, to clean-up any remaining infection traces, scan for trojans, adware, cookies, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus. Press "Scan your computer now online and clean it for free!" on the left.

Good luck!

Worked for me too, thanks!!!! Report It
That popup is a trojan/spyware/hijacker. Don't click on the link provided.
Install avast antivirus. I found avast a better free option that can detect malware that is not detected by other antivirus.
